oil paintings and watercolor vignettes

I have been drawing and painting for most of my life. It began with my first set of books at age six. While teaching myself to read I would copy the bird and animal photographs from NatGeo's "Baby Animals" children's series of books.

As an adult I have continued my love of drawing and painting, always staying faithful to my first chosen subject: nature.

I am currently creating art full time and planning a cross-country roadtrip where I will photograph this beautiful country and paint it alla prima in oils.

ALLA PRIMA PAINTINGS

Alla prima means a painting that was completed in one sitting. Sometimes it's a lot of fun and highly enjoyable to just let the paint fly. Normally I paint in detail and I plan my work from sketch to finished painting. But with alla prima the work goes fast and you can get completely lost in it.

Currently the only work painted alla prima are the pieces in the Big Mountains series. These paintings were each completed between two and four hours.

WHY MOONLIGHT?

I find mountains to be a very special place at night. Depending on mood and atttiude they can be a place of solace or a scary, uncertain place with frightening sounds and unfamiliar inhabitants. A place where the imagination can run wild.

In addition, I think that mountains in the moonlight are striking and very beautiful. This coupled with a well painted sky can make for a unique painting, and a scene that most people don't get to see. I enjoy doing something different and out-of-the-box and these moonlight paintings have been well received thus far!

SERIES PAINTINGS

BIG MOUNTAINS

I love mountains and hope to move back to the mountains ... preferably somewhere in the Sierras. Until then I paint mountains and have started a series I call simply "Big Mountains." This series will consist of the Seven Summits as well as some of the more beautiful and / or notable mountains of the world, painted in the moonlight.

ASPEN NIGHTS

The Aspen Nights series was born from a vision I had about 20 years ago after seeing a movie called "Aspen Extreme."

In the movie there is a scene that shows Ajax towering over the twinkling pink lights of Aspen in the early hours of a frigid winter morning. To me this was immediately inspiring and I went right to the drafting table and began sketching my visions. 20 years later I am in the middle of the series and I am having a great time with it.

NATURAL ABSTRACTS

Painting abstracts is new for me and I have found them extremely enjoyable. "Sunflower" and "Waterways" are visions that I thought about seriously before putting paint to canvas. I am proud of them and I look forward to more abstracts.

FLORIDA WILDLIFE

Of course I am going to paint wildlife. It was my first subject and will probably be my last.

I am proud of my new Florida Wildlife series and it is going to give me a good amount of work because we have so much great wildlife here. Florida is the only place I've seen huge white birds chasing lizards down in the median of a six-lane city street.
