About the Images
When I want to reproduce nature realistically I do it with a camera. Because my paintings are interpretations of feelings which certain scenes impart to me and not representations of real memories, the photorealistic style of painting is not a suitable facilitator for bringing these visions to fruition. I have developed what I call a thick, 'heavy handed' method of applying paint in monotone which allows me to solidify structure without muddying colors, and build depth and color later with glazes. This practice foregoes fine detail for the capture of mood which is usually the goal in my work.
My greatest strengths are my visions. I have magical, spiritual visions that take me away for endless periods of time. When visualization of a painting occurs it is usually accompanied by a great piece of classical music. Notes move the brushes and sometimes with alla prima work the painting is a result of a prolonged meditation intertwined with an endless stream of classical musical notes. While in these elongated painting sessions I can go for days without barely a wink or crumb. Exhausted, starved and completely fulfilled at the end of a painting session is a feeling I can only hope every painter feels at least once. It's what I live for.
The matching of these visions with the skills of my hands is a perpetual dance between eye, mind, determination and the capacity for learning, failure and success. Painting is a supremely satisfying dance, more fulfilling than any I have undertaken thus far in my life and I cannot bear to consider a life without it.
I use Canon cameras, lenses and accessories for my photography and the majority of the photographs seen here were made on Sensia and Provia films. I am happy to announce that I have converted to Canon's digital system. All animals are wild and photographed in their natural habitats. Rehabilitating animals are clearly marked as such.
For painting I use Gamblin oil colors, Isabey brushes, Windsor Newton watercolors and Arches hot pressed paper, usually 300lb, Golden acrylics and Derwent pencils and pastels. I use prestretched canvas and linen and will gesso masonite for a smooth finish. I enjoy making paper when I have the space.
