spoonbillA Day in the Field Design Workshops
with Gloria Hopkins

I am proud to announce that I am now conducting individual, one-on-one photographic and image design workshops.

I'm yours from sunup to sunset and our subjects can be anything from birds, lizards, ocean scenes, wetland scenes, macros, the Florida Keys, beach scenes or intimate swamp scenes. Your choice. I buy two meals, drive you to locations and absorb transportation costs.

From the workshop, you can expect:

1) My full attention. I will bring minimal gear for myself and focus 100% on you and your art. I will answer all questions to the best of my abilities and I will always tell you how and why I would handle a particular opportunity.

2) By the end you will have a solid understanding of the basics of photographic composition and image design. I won't let you go until you "get it." I'm passionate about this and will also be there for you after the workshop to answer questions or advise if necessary. You will get your money's worth and then some.

3) There will be sit-down sessions where we will critique your 10 best photographs, and take a look at 10 of my best. We will thoroughly discuss all the photographic attributes of the images and the processes in which they were made.

4) During a sit-down session, we will cover a booklet I have prepared which contains 10 composition maps. These are marked-up photographs outlining the features of the composition, and why it was designed as it was. You will take this home. I will also give you a printed copy of my design articles.

5) All of the design concepts found on this page, can be covered. These workshops are highly customized and we can work on whatever issues you would like.

6) We will discuss the more abstract concepts of composition, where some of today's popular techniques originated, composition in art history, and more.

7) I will have a structured lesson prepared especially for you based on exploratory conversations. We can work on anything you like. This is your day!

8) Be prepared to feel special. The focus is on you, your needs and your comfort (it gets oppressively hot here). If you're too hot in the swamp we can go to the beach or delay and do night shots, whatever is best for you. There is no rigid plan unless they are prearranged. I do not, however, wade with the gators!

What not to expect:

This is not a beginning photography class and I will touch only lightly on technical issues. My strengths are image design, long-lens technique, difficult lighting situations, bird identification and bird and wildlife behavior.

It is expected that you have a solid understanding of the basics of photography, including exposure for natural light, and that you have fully mastered your photographic gear. Very little time will be spent discussing equipment.
